LITERACY



literacy rate is known as the relationship between people from an specific age range who reported being literate vs the total of population who answered this question. "United Nations recommends that information about literacy must be collected for all persons greater than or equal to 10 years old. Colombian censuses collected this information from younger ages. In the censuses of 1973, 1985 and 1993, the question to measure literacy is applied to all persons 5 years and older. In 1964 this question was asked of all persons "1. While the 2005 Census asked after three years, the rate is calculated from 5 years to preserve comparability with other surveys.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, it is processed to the age ranges where educational policies can be focused to reduce illiteracy.


LITERACY - Population greater than or equal to 15 years old

Illiteracy rates have declined over the past 41 years in the population ranges greater or equal to 15 years old. It decreased from a rate of 27.1% in 1964 to 8.4% in 2005, according with the General Census results.


91.6% of the population ranges greater or equal to 15 years old can read and write. For municipalities the percentage is 94.5% and for the remainder is 81.5%.


Illiteracy rates have declined over the past 32 years in the population of 15-24 years. From a rate of 11.1% in 1973 decreased at a rate of 3.1% in 2005, according to the Census results.


96.9% of the population range between 15 - 24 years is literate. For municipalities this percentage is 98.3% and for the remainder is 92.2%.


Results of General Census presents an increment levels of school attendance in formal establishments:

In fact, while in 1973 the attendance rate for the age range 5-6 years old was 11.1%, in 2005 this rate stands at 78.0%.


For the age range 7-11 years, the attendance rate increased from 58.5% in 1973 to 92.0% in 2005.

For population range between 12 and 17 years the attendance rate in 1973 was 57.4%, and in 2005 reports 77.8%.

For the age range 5-17 years, the attendance rate increased from 50.8% in 1973 to 83.3% in 2005.


For population age range between 18-24 years, the attendance rate in 1973 was 19.1%, while in 2005 is 27.1%.

78.0% of the population range aged 5 to 6 years range was attending a formal educational institution.


92.0% of the population ranged from 7 to 11 years old was attending a formal educational institution.


27.1% of the population aged 18 to 24 years attending a formal educational institution. For the headers, this percentage is 31.1% and the rest is 13.1%.


The attendance rate for the age range between 5 to 24 years old in 1973 was 42.5% ; in 2005 this rate stands at 65.5%.



65.5% of the population aged 5 to 24 years old was attending a formal educational institution. For the urban centers, this percentage is 68.7% and for the remainder is 56.2%.

51.2% of all of Colombia's population are women, and 48.8% are men.

Women represent a greater proportion of the population in all population groups except the group age ranged between 0-14 years, in which results are 51% for male and 49% female.

3.4% of Colombia´s population was recognized as indigenous. In this group 49.6% are female and 50.4% are male.

0.001% of Colombia´s population was recognized as ROM. In this group 48.0% are women and 52.0% are men.

10.6% of Colombia´s population was recognized as Afro-Colombian. In this group 50.5% are women and 49.5% are men.

46.7% of men greater than 10 years old reported being unmarried if compared with 41.3% of women.

44.2% of women greater than 10 years old lives with a partner. In this group 22.0% are married, 20.2% are living with a partner for over two years and less than 1.9% lead two years of cohabitation.

6.2% of women greater than 10 years old, were separated or divorced; 6.3% are widowed, men separated or divorced are 3.3% and 1.6% of men are widowed.

In a nationwide classification, 9.8% of women and 10.4% of men, greater than or equal to 3 years old, have no any education. 13.4% of women and 13.5% of men have completed basic primary school. 4.8% of women and 4.3% of men have completed secondary school and 7.0% of women and 6.7% of men report professional educational level.

In urban areas, 7.2%% of women and 7.5% of men, greater than or equal to 3 years old, do not have any education. 12.8% of women and 12.6% of men report Full basic primary education level. 5.3% of women and 5.0% of men have completed secondary education level and 8.8% of women and 8.7% of men have professional education level.

In rural areas, 19.2% of women and 20% of men, greater than or equal to 3 years old, have no any education. 15.7% of women and 16.1% of men have completed primary basic school. 2.9% of women and 2.4% of men have completed secondary school and 0.9% of women and 0.8% of men have professional educational level.

From all women reported as household heads, 10.6% have no educational level compared with 9.4% of male heads.

From all women reported as heads home, 14.2% had complete secondary compared to 15.6% of male heads.


From the total of female-headed reported as household, 8.4% has professional and educational level while in men this educational level reports 8.5%.
